Art at Hotel Versey

Dr. Steve Art at Hotel Versey

Artist: Dr. Steve

Title: Dancers

A retired psychologist, Steve has been creating sculpture for 25 years. He began creating in stone, and much more recently began working in metals; steel, sheet copper, and molten copper with added alloys. Currently he predominantly works with metals, especially bicycle chains. He enjoys making curvy, soft forms with materials that are hard. In metals, he works inside "negative space" in concrete forms from the back, only seeing the final product when it is removed from the form. The concrete forms are made from mannequins or life casts. The bicycle chain pieces have elicited many different comments, including that the patterns created are intrinsically attractive, that the alternation between light and dark is interesting, that there is a Yin-Yang energy in the work, and that the shadows cast a lacy texture, with the shadows being a manifestation of Yin energy in contrast to the hard metal Yang materials and process. Steve's work is in collections in New Mexico, Texas, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, California, and Chicago, Illinois.

Chicago Barton DeGraaf Art

Artist: Barton DeGraaf

Title: A Perfect Day

Bart has been painting his whole life.  Born in Chicago, he fell in love with art at the Art Institute of Chicago.  He pursued his passion and received his BFA in 1999 from Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design in Denver, Colorado.  He currently lives in Bend, Oregon with his wife Heidi and son Jon.

The inspiration for his piece titled, "A Perfect Day" comes from wanting to replicate that first experience of going to the ballpark for the very first time.  The anticipation, excitement, the smell of the Vienna Beef hot dogs and French fries, crunch of peanut shells under your feet, and pure joy of the fans.  He's looking forward to having the opportunity to share a first-time experience with his son this summer.

For this piece Bart custom made a Birchwood panel and used a blow torch to torch the edge and background.  He used thin acrylic varnishes to create the underpaint to incorporate the wood grain.  He layered acrylics with glazes to create the texture and movement.
